Do you trust your Tradie?

A while ago, I attended a property to provide a quotation to re-secure some internal cornice. Approaching the driveway, I noticed some fairly ‘shoddy’ repairs to the gable. Discussing this with the home-owner, she said “I had a handyman come out to fix this”. Not only was I shocked to learn that a handyman had done this, but that he had also refused to return to the ‘scene of the crime’ to repair it properly.

All too often I get phone calls from people, especially from the elderly or people who do not understand English very well, who have had sub-standard repairs done to their property and the trades person who has completed the repairs no longer wants to know about it.

So ask yourself the question……Do you trust your Tradie ? Always make sure you do your research when engaging a trades person. I recommend a check list on the following:

  • Google Reviews – make sure you read the google reviews of the trades person you are considering engaging.
  • Experience – Ask the trades person whether they are experienced in your particular repair requirements and how long have they been in business.
  • Referrals – Ask your friends and family if they have a trades person they have used and would be happy to recommend.
  • Price – Make sure your trades person is up front about their hourly rate. If they are quoting you, make sure this is in writing and they complete all the repairs listed on the quotation.
  • Never pay cash up front – only pay the full amount once the work is completed.

Spring is here…….says Handyman Dave!

Spring has sprung…..as they say!  The cold winter months are almost behind us.  That feeling of happiness with the first rays of sunshine for Spring gives us all a sense of positivity.  We venture outside, spending more time in the garden and around the house.  We inevitably find that the house needs some TLC!  It’s time to make the house look fantastic again, and ensuring your property is safe.  Making sure you’re maintaining your home, especially for the harsh summer sun ahead, is a must-do!

Here’s a few handyman tips on the attention you need to give your home:

  1. Clean your gutters – Ensure the gutters and downpipes are clean and free of debris to avoid over-spill from water. Over-full gutters lead to internal flooding.
  2. Re-staining/re-sealing your timber decking – This will ensure it’s not damaged from the summer sun.
  3. Cut back trees growing too close to roofs and wall structures – this can be a potential fire hazard in the summer.
  4. Check all fly screens.  Do they need replacing?
  5. Pressure clean driveways and paths from the build up of mildew over winter.  Always give your property a fresh look.
  6. Clean windows around the house – they build up with grime and rain stains over winter.
  7. Re-spray your fences with a fresh coat of paint.  This ensures better protection from the summer sun and gives your whole property a clean look.

These are all simple things that can be done, but better left to a professional.  Dave’s Home Maintenance can help with all your property maintenance needs, at an affordable cost.

Weatherboard Rejuvenation Project – Hawthorn

Completion of this weatherboard rejuvenation project in Hawthorn this week made the homeowners very happy!  Weatherboards, as you a most likely know, require continual maintenance.  Unlike a standard brick house, weatherboards hold a traditional charm.  But they do come with the added chore of regular attendance to painting and repairing of rotted boards.

This project, as the photo’s show, involved various sections of exterior walls of this home in Hawthorn.  Boards were removed, replaced and painted.

What a huge difference!
